C-COOP – Culatra Island Cooperative for Sustainability
25 members. Established in 2022
A business plan to…
Support the Culatra Renewable Energy Community’s transition from technical readiness to full operation, positioning it as a living example of a fair, resilient and community-led energy transition. By increasing local solar PV capacity, introducing smart systems to better manage energy generation and demand, and exploring clean mobility solutions linked to renewable energy, the project seeks to lower energy costs, reduce vulnerability and create lasting local value. Its wider vision is to show that even a small island community, facing structural and climate-related challenges, can lead its own transition through innovation, participation and shared benefit. In doing so, Culatra can become both a practical local solution and a source of inspiration for other island and coastal communities.
Impact in the community
The 300 kWp of solar PV is expected to generate 501 MWh/year, covering most of daytime demand and directly contributing to local energy self-sufficiency while avoids around 275 tons of CO₂ annually. Combined with demand-side strategies, electricity bills are expected to fall by up to 30%, directly addressing energy poverty. The energy community plans to reinvest all economic benefits generated into activities that strengthen local well-being, resilience, and sustainability, creating local jobs, and establishing a Sustainability Fund.
