A business plan to…

The Energy Community of Sifnos was founded in 2013. The community’s essential target is to make the island of Sifnos an energy independent and democratic island and to eliminate energy poverty, with projects adapted on the local energy needs and based on the locally available energy resources and with the active participation of all islanders and the local Municipality. To this end, the business plan aims to investigate the technical feasibility and the economic viability of the community, on the basis of the following projects: 1. a combined wind park – seawater pumped hydro storage plant 2. a hydrogen production plant, to support sustainable maritime transportation 3. small wind turbines stations 4. decentralized photovoltaic plants 5. transition to e-mobility 6. development of smart grids – digitalization of electricity.

Dimitris Katsaprakakis

"Given that the Energy Community of Sifnos have faced several obstacles on the implementation of its targets, ENERCOM facility is expected to offer us the chance to restart our efforts, with a new planning of feasible projects, exhibiting high innovation based on the combined operation of different technologies which, in total, can lead to just, effective and sustainable energy trannsition for all."

Dimitris Katsaprakakis - Vice President of the Board

Impact in the community

The proprosed cluster of projects can ensure full electricity demands coverage, including e-mobility, with active participation of all islanders and the local municipality at all stages of implementation (from the design to the funding and the operation and management). The plan, apart from the energy needs coverage and the elimination of energy poverty, aims to handle major issues of insularity, such as transportation from and to the island, production of fresh water through new desalination plants, and create new employement opportunities.
